Excavator Sales Show Signs of Recovery in China

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> China-based SANY Group posted 2.3% market share growth in the first quarter. <br /> <br /> Sales of excavators in China rebounded in March after a steep decline at the beginning of the year, according to a new investor report published April 9 by J.P. Morgan.<br /> <br /> Excavator sales are still down compared to a year ago, but the pace of decline in March was only 6%, a significant improvement over January-February's precipitous drop of 47%.<br /> <br /> China-based excavator manufacturers have expanded their market share, with SANY showing a 2.3% growth in the first quarter, driven by a new product rollout and a focus on smaller earthmoving machines. Small excavators have shown growth across the board in China, accounting for 54% of total excavator sales during the first quarter of 2013.<br /> <br /> Changes in market shares for foreign companies was mixed, however, with such manufacturers as Doosan, Hitachi and Komatsu slightly down. In addition to Sany, Caterpillar Inc. also grew share, posting a small, 0.2% increase in the first quarter.<br /> <br /> Growth in excavator sales in China was not limited to the domestic market. Export sales were up by 68% in the first quarter.<br /> <br /> "We view this as incrementally positive for Cat," says Ann Duignan, J.P. Morgan analyst, who cautions that "excess inventory remains in the channel and is likely to remain an overhang on the market through 2013."<br /> <br /> The rise in excavator sales in March also reflects the start of construction season, but that hasn’t translated into sales in other types of equipment. Concrete machinery and crane sales remain sluggish, and according to the report their outlook for 2013 remains unchanged. <br /> <br /></div>

Caterpillar Rolls Out Hybrid Excavatoras Layoffs Hit Mining Division

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <br /> As a slowdown in mining sales softens its bottom line, equipment giant Caterpillar Inc. is hoping construction customers will be drawn to the promised fuel savings in its new 336EH hybrid excavator.<br /> Earlier this month, ENR visited the company's demonstration center in Edwards, Ill., to see the machine up close. Announced last year, the new machine is based on the design of the existing non-hybrid 336E but uses a special hydraulic hybrid system to recycle energy.<br /> The system takes advantage of an excavator's typical duty cycle: digging, swinging, dumping and swinging back to dig. The excavator captures swing energy as the machine's rotation slows down by storing pressurized fluid in accumulator tanks. It then pushes the fluid back out to aid the next cycle.<br /> According to Caterpillar, the new 40-ton model boasts a 25% fuel consumption improvement over the non-hybrid 336E, with only a 9% price increase. But when measured in tons moved per liter of fuel, the machine promises up to a 50% fuel-efficiency increase.<br /> Running on the same 300-hp, Tier 4 Interim Cat 9-liter diesel engine as the standard 336E excavator, the hybrid model adds a pair of hydraulic accumulator tanks, located in the back of the machine and precharged with nitrogen gas. The stored hydraulic power allows the excavator’s diesel engine to run at a near-constant speed of 1,500 rpm, which conserves fuel and emissions.<br /> Caterpillar says order sheets for the new hybrid are full, but the company is keeping mum about the size of the initial run. The 336EH will be formally launched at Bauma later this month in Munich, where Caterpillar will hand the keys of the machine to its first buyer, Norway-based SA-Anlegg AS.<br /> "The hybrid is currently being manufactured in our facility in Japan, and we plan to build them in our Victoria, Texas, facility for the American market," says Ken Gray, Caterpillar global product manager for large hydraulic excavators. "If there's a good reception at Bauma, it will then be built in our Belgian plant.”<br /> The non-hybrid 336E will continue to be available, Gray adds. “We want the customer to have that option, but we see the hydraulic hybrid as a complete system, not just an add-on [to the 336E],” he says. Caterpillar is also developing a 336FH excavator, which will meet Tier 4 Final emissions standards.<br /> Caterpillar may be looking for a bright spot in the construction sector as the equipment giant has taken a hit in its mining division this year. The company took a $580-million write-down at the beginning of the year after its acquisition of a China-based mining equipment manufacturer went sour. The write-down, coupled with an overall softening mining sector, has resulted in lower demand for the company's new mining equipment.<br /> These recent issues may be to blame for recent layoffs at several of Caterpillar’s U.S. facilities, including over 460 positions at its Decatur, Ill., plant and up to 300 positions in its South Milwaukee, Wis., facility, both set to take effect in June.<br /> Analysts have lowered their expectations for Caterpillar’s first-quarter earnings, as the company is expected to report its first back-to-back drop in quarterly profit since 2009. <br /> <br /> <br /></div>

Caterpillar unveils the 336EH, its first hybrid <b>excavator</b>

The new machine is the first in an upcoming line of hybrid excavators and will be officially launched in April 2013 at the Bauma International Trade Fair in Munich, Germany.<br /> However, this isn’t an electricity/fuel hybrid like the automobile industry has segued into. Instead, Cat developed a new hydraulic hybrid technology that it says allows the new 336EH to get up to 25 percent greater fuel efficiency than the standard 336E and up to 50 percent greater fuel efficiency over the Cat 336D.<br /> “We wanted to accomplish this hydraulically instead of electrically,” says Ken Gray, Caterpillar’s global product manager for large hydraulic excavators. About 98 percent of the components on the new excavator are currently standard, and the 336EH will be the largest hybrid excavator in the world, the company says.<br /> “To us, the term hybrid means taking extra energy and storing it until it can be used,” Gray says. “It doesn’t matter what kind of energy is stored. One plus: it will be the quietest machine in its size class, with a 65.2 decibel sound level.”<br /> “The difficult part of it is how to control the flow,” he adds. “That’s where the real intellectual property is.”<br /> Machine design on the 336 started back in 2009, but the design on some of the hydraulic components goes back further. Cat says it made the decision to go all-hydraulic in 2011, choosing the all-hydraulic approach because of the high power density of hydraulics.<br /> “It works a lot like a clock coil spring,” Gray says, taking advantage of the excavator’s swing cycle and the fact that there are two start-stops in a typical 15-second load and dump cycle. When the machine slows, the hydraulics store energy that will be reused when it swings again. “It’s the first hybrid machine that will actually lower a user’s owning and operating costs,” Gray says.<br /> Cat is using three main new components to conserve, optimize, and reuse hydraulic power:<br /> ? Electronic Standardized Programmable Pump: By matching the engine and pump closely, Cat can use a larger displacement pump and significantly reduce fuel consumption;<br /> ? Adaptive Control System: The brains of the system, this directs the flow of the energy throughout the machine; and<br /> ? To address the problem of unequal electricity rates among solar-powered homeowners and others, policy-makers are turning to larger projects. Land-based systems positively impact communities by creating more jobs, income, and greater flow of electricity to the grid. Rebate structures for smaller systems are replaced by incentives for larger projects that take advantage of the economy of scale.Definitions of the scale of solar installations vary between region and state. In their Solar Incentive Program, the city of Los Angeles defines “small” systems as projects that produce between 30 kW and 150 kW, and “large-scale” projects as producers of between 151 kW and 999 kW. According to the solar permitting standards of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, large-scale ground-mounted solar refers to any system of 250 kW or more. Renewable Energy Certificate prices are based on the size of the installed system - small systems create 10 kW or less; large systems, between 10 kW and 1 MW. Most commercial facilities require less than 1 MW of power. Most small businesses and homes can run on 1 to 5 kW systems, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.Solar developments for municipal use or distribution that are built on privately owned land rely on PPAs to enable a third-party developer to own, maintain, and operate the system. The landowner or another off taker of the electricity receives a lower, stabilized electric rate. The solar power developer benefits from the rebates or incentives allowed to the host landowner. The property owner assumes no operating risk in their visible support of the environment. The company purchasing the energy is able to reduce their carbon emissions and attain Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs) in states that have Renewable Portfolio Standards.<strong>Risks and Challenges</strong> <strong>for Landowners</strong>Despite the advantages of a PPA agreement, the host property owner faces some challenges. Solar systems may cause a potential increase in property value, which can also lead to an increase in property taxes. PPAs may cost more than simple purchases of solar power systems due to potentially higher transaction costs. Net metered PPAs may sometimes result in two electric bills if the PV system does not provide all of the host's necessary electricity.Feed-in tariffs, on the other hand, function differently than renewable portfolio standards by? providing the electricity-generating installer with a free source of energy as well as payment from a utility company. The property owner, therefore, no longer needs to import electricity from the grid unless in need of additional power. When they transfer their excess energy, they are paid an export tariff.Residential (2kW) projects cost $0.34 per kilowatt hour to operate, while industrial (500 kW) only cost about $0.19. Installation costs also reveal the advantages of large-scale solar. A small-scale system installation totals $8.20 per watt of power produced, but a large system nearly halves that price, costing $4.77 per watt of power produced. Last year alone, the power produced by large-scale installations rose to 758 MW installed and 297 MW installed in small-scale operations. Larger systems have grown at a faster rate historically than small-scale operations. In 2009, the power produced by residential installations in the U.S. totaled around 400 MW and grew to 15,000 MW by 2012 – an increase of 14600 MW. Residential installations only grew from 100MW to 400MW in this time period.Larger scale solar PV operations can qualify as energy generators and also receive REC's in RPS eligible states. They provide energy through a wholesale power sales transaction, usually to a utility. Energy generators fall under Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) rules for interconnection. The FERC regulates system safety and reliability. The Solar Energy Industries Association hopes to quicken and lower the costs of grid interconnection, which would create countless opportunities for many new solar projects to connect to the grid.Development of large scale renewable energy projects, including solar PV, assists municipalities by reducing their annual?energy expenses?and serving as a hedge against volatility in the energy sector. Many small to mid-size PV installations are also emerging across America, providing new jobs, financing, and electricity to countless communities. A report by the NPD Solarbuzz United States Deal Tracker reveals that 40% of all PV projects in the US are 500 kW or less. With the addition of tax incentives and rebates, projects at this size pay for themselves.Growth in solar development, spurred by the government’s “All of the Above” program, promises to power almost 7 million homes in the next ten years. The first of its kind, the plan reserves public land for solar projects with only minimal impact on wildlife and waters. This blueprint sets aside 285,000 acres of public land in 17 key areas in the nation’s sunbelt – California, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico. Many groups including the Audubon Society and Southern California Edison were quick to endorse the deal.<strong>Land Use and Permitting</strong><br /> Despite the new popularity of Solar PV projects, implementing a project at any scale presents a number of challenges. Before a PPA?may be finalized?or construction may?begin, regulatory permits must be secured and the design finalized.?The importance of these steps is?often?under-estimated or in some cases,?completely?overlooked.?Construction planning must account for solar-specific considerations. An auto-idling system reduces engine speed when the controls are inactive for a specified time (operator pre-set on the ECR58D and ECR88D via the display between three and 20 seconds), reducing running costs and fuel consumption.</div> <div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, helvetica, verdana, tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 13px; margin-bottom: 0.8em; margin-top: 0em; padding: 0px;"> In terms of new road building equipment, the 9 m maximum pave width P6870C ABG wheeled paver is the latest addition to the Volvo range. The company says it is quieter, more productive, and up to 30% more fuel efficient than its predecessor.</div> <div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, helvetica, verdana, tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 13px; margin-bottom: 0.8em; margin-top: 0em; padding: 0px;"> A key feature is the new fume extraction system, which has seen Volvo shortlisted for one of the Bauma Innovation Awards.
