Suttle Projects, based at Swanage in Dorset in the UK, has extended the company’s sheet piling capability with the purchase of a new Doosan DX140LC-3 14 tonne crawler excavator from Kellands (Plant Sales) Ltd, the Authorised Dealer for the Doosan, Bobcat and Montabert ranges for the whole of South West England.

DX140LC-3 excavator has just completed a project on behalf of the Borough of Poole Council, providing maintenance and protection works on the sea defences bordering Baiter Park in Poole Harbour.
Joe Paine, Managing Director of Suttle Projects Ltd, said: “The new DX140LC-3 excavator complements the larger Doosan DX255LC-3 25 tonne machine we purchased from Kellands at the end of 2013 and provides an extension to our sheet-piling capability for projects such as that in Poole, where a smaller machine is required.
“With the new 14 tonner in our fleet, we can carry out more of the intricate sheet piling jobs that are increasingly being required in and around small rivers and railway sites across the country. With over £1.5 million of contracts of this type a year over the last two years, our turnover in this area has grown significantly and we already have six jobs booked in for next summer.
“The purchase of a further new Doosan excavator demonstrates our belief that only the most modern and up-to-date technology should be used for our sheet piling work, a view that is not shared in every part of our industry. As environmental concerns increase, new generation equipment such as the Doosan DX140LC-3 excavator will be a prerequisite for work on projects of this type.”
The maintenance and protection works on the sea wall by Baiter car park were necessary after storms had stripped sand from the beach causing movement in the wall's foundations and damage to the footpath/cycleway behind. After quickly repairing the footpath, the substantial volume of sand that had been deposited further down the beach was relocated to the bottom of the seawall to reduce the impact of further tidal action.
The works that have now been completed have reinstated the robustness of the sea wall, with the Doosan DX140LC-3 excavator installing a line of sheet piles in front of the existing wall to protect the foundations from future damage by preventing underscouring by the sea.
Founded in 2008, Suttle Projects is part of the long-established Suttles Group, formally incorporated as J. Suttle Transport Ltd. It was set up to deliver very technical site-based projects for the Group, where the use of particular plant and technical expertise could be of use to the company’s civil engineering and groundwork customers, both locally in Dorset and throughout the UK.
The Suttle family name has been part of the local stone industry in Dorset as stone merchants and quarry owners for over 70 years. Today the company runs a large fleet of modern tipper and crane offload vehicles and is the premier provider of crushed stone, aggregates, recycled crushed concrete and natural stone products in the Poole, Bournemouth and neighbouring areas of Dorset. In addition, Suttles works together with civil engineering and construction companies to provide major site clearance facilities.
The DX140LC-3 crawler excavator is powered by the Doosan DL06K ‘common rail’ 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine meeting Stage IIIB engine emission regulations through the use of EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) after-treatment technologies. The engine has a displacement of 5890 cm³ and delivers 15% more power [82 kW (109 HP) @ 1850 RPM (SAE J1995)] than that in the previous Stage IIIA model. Field tests show a reduction of up to 17.5% in fuel consumption, depending on the operating mode selected and the work being undertaken.
